South Carolina’s offensive staff has a Texas flavor to it, with offensive coordinator Kendal Briles and offensive line coaches Randy Clements and Jason Smith all having spent time in the Lone Star State. So, it’s not a surprise the coaches have gone back to Texas looking for talent.
Clemens and Smith offered OL Ty McCurry (6-6 295) of Southlake earlier this year, and McCurry made a visit to Columbia in June. His interest is strong enough in the Gamecocks that he plans to return for the Georgia game later this month.
“They’ve been great with being in contact with me every day and making me feel like a priority,” McCurry said. ” That’s been a good thing to see from them for sure. You know, I loved my time out there getting to see Columbia and everything for sure. Obviously, the coaching staff is great. I’ll be going up there in November for a game. I made that a priority, and they’re definitely one of the top contenders for me at this point.”
McCurry said the Gamecock coaches have been very clear regarding how they feel about him.
“They’ve been making sure that I know that I’m a priority for them,” McCurry said. “He (Clements) came by my school a couple of weeks ago and said hi and everything like that. Just making me feel like I definitely belong at South Carolina and have a future there. It’s been good.”
McCurry has been watching the Gamecocks from home this season. The current three-game winning streak has certainly increased his excitement for the program.
“They’re balling out,” he said. “Coach Clem obviously has a long history, and then Coach Smooth coming in. He’s a great guy. He’s like one of the more personal coaches I’ve ever met. So that’s been good for sure. It definitely excites me a lot to see that they’re moving along.
McCurry is coming off of a visit to Ole Miss last weekend, his second visit to Oxford. He has also been to games this season at Georgia, LSU, and Texas A&M. He is also looking at Ohio State and Auburn for visits.
Those are just some of the major offers for McCurry, who received his 32nd offer last week from Arizona. South Carolina has worked its way into his thought process, which will give the Gamecocks a good chance to make his eventual short list.
“Yeah, no doubt. They’re up there for sure,” McCurry said. “I kind of have a mental list of my top schools. I don’t really have anything official, just because I don’t really see the point in doing that until I commit or get close to it. Just kind of keeping my options open. Everything can change nowadays. Obviously, you can see that with how the SEC is going. Don’t really know who’s going to win anymore.”
Because of his length, McCurry said he plays tackle in high school, but added that he could play guard in college if that’s what the coaches prefer.
