Florida destroys Jacksonville: Takeaways as No. 1 Gators thrive behind stars in home opener

It was relatively easy work for the No. 1 Florida Gators on Wednesday night in their home opener at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Fresh off an important ranked win to kick off the 2026-27 season, Florida (2-0) took care of business with an 88-57 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins in the House of Horrors.

The stars shone brightly for the Gators with all three frontcourt standouts dominating. Senior center Rueben Chinleyu posted a career-high 21 points, and senior forward Alex Condon fell two assists shy of a rare triple-double before both exited midway through the second half.

Head coach Todd Golden will have his criticisms, but Florida took care of business and looked impressive doing so. Its improved efficiency and deep bench usage are bright spots at this early juncture in the season.

Let’s dive into everything that happened Thursday night with some Fastbreak Takeaways from the Gators’ dominant victory in their home opener.

It was over when … Florida put together a 10-0 run after briefly seeing its lead diminished to 15 points, pushing ahead by 25 with 15 minutes to play. The lead extended to 34 points after a 13-0 run minutes later, and UF led by as many as 36 late in the second half.

First half focus: The Gators’ defensive effort was not there in the early going, though a personal 7-0 run by Chinyelu pushed Florida ahead by double digits midway through the period. Leading by five with as many minutes remaining, the Gators erupted on a 19-2 run to end the half, draining a trio of 3-pointers on their way to leading by 22 at the break. Florida shot 6 of 12 from long range (.500) and impressively registered assists on 13 of 18 baskets (.722).

Exceptional efforts: Chinyelu was the standout with his personal best point total; he hit 7 of 9 shots and 7 of 9 free throws to go along with seven boards. Lucky night. Condon nearly posted a triple-double in the first half but did not get enough assist opportunities in the latter stanza, finishing with 12 points, 12 boards, eight dimes and three blocks. Senior F Thomas Haugh was dominant early before cooling off late — as he did in the opener — finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Guards fifth-year Denzel Aberdeen and senior Urban Klavžar each scored 12 points, combining to go 7 of 12 from deep. The Gators finished 11 of 23 from 3-point land, doubled up rebounding 52-25 (20-8 offensive), ruled the paint 36-12 and had 18 assists on 29 baskets (.621).

Odds & ends: Florida improved to 34-5 all-time against Jacksonville with an 18-2 mark in the O’Dome … UF won its 36th consecutive home opener … the Gators entered a game as the No. 1 team in the nation at home for the first time since the end of the 2014 season … UF is now 23-3 against former assistants since the start of the 2000 season; Jordan Mincey is head coach of JU … Condon now has 523 career defensive rebounds, tying Alex Tyus for eighth most in program history … Florida under Golden improved to 85-10 when leading at halftime, 97-7 when leading with 5 minutes left, 85-15 when outrebounding an opponent, 74-11 when shooting 45% or better from the field, 94-7 when outshooting an opponent, 31-4 when shooting 40% or better from 3-point range, 80-10 when outshooting an opponent from 3-point range and 43-3 when 5+ players score in double figures

What it means: Not much. As Chris Rock once said, the Gators did what they were supposed to do. It was a bit rocky early, but once Golden hammered home that improved defensive effort was needed, Florida was off and running. This mostly served as a nice establishment game coming off a hotly contested opener. The Gators’ improved 3-point shooting has been the most notable development through two games. It was one of the few characteristics that prevented Florida (and prevents most teams) from being true contenders once the 2025 NCAA Tournament began. UF finished 11 of 25 from downtown, making 10+ 3-pointers for the second time in as many games after only doing it on six occasions last season.

What’s next? Florida will visit Florida State on Tuesday. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. ET and air live on ESPN2. The Gators have won five straight over the Seminoles, three of those games by double digits, but only prevailed 78-76 last season.

This one is for the ladies: Florida improved to 2-0 with a 95-65 demolition of UCF. Junior transfer G Kiyomi McMiller (Penn State) scored 42 points on 7 of 10 shooting from downtown; she now has 73 points in two games. Junior transfer F Vivian Iwuchukwu (USC) posted 20 points, senior transfer F Jade Weathersby (UAB) contributed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore transfer G Vanessa Harris (Rhode Island) came one point shy of the same with 9 and 12.
