Berwick, Pennsylvania, USA

Berwick is a historic borough located in Columbia County in northeastern Pennsylvania, nestled right along the north bank of the Susquehanna River. It sits about 28 miles southwest of Wilkes-Barre and has a population hovering around 10,300 residents.

Berwick packs an incredibly rich industrial history, a massive high school football legacy, and a couple of famous hometown snacks.

# 1. Industrial Powerhouse & The “Arsenal of Democracy”

Founded in 1786 by a Welsh Quaker surveyor named Evan Owen and named after the English town Berwick-upon-Tweed, the borough evolved into a massive manufacturing hub by the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

* **The American Car and Foundry Company (ACF):** Berwick was a premiere producer of rolling stock and all-steel railroad cars.
* **World War II & Stuart Tanks:** During WWII, the ACF plant in Berwick became a vital asset to the Allied war effort. The factory built **15,224 Stuart Light Tanks**. At its peak, the facility employed over 9,000 workers and rolled out up to 40 tanks a day. It also manufactured a massive percentage of the armor plate used across all US military vehicles, making it a prime target on Hitler’s infamous “Amerika Bomber” strike list.

# 2. Hometown Flavors & Industry

If you’ve ever eaten **Wise Potato Chips**, you’ve tasted Berwick’s history.

* **Wise Foods, Inc.:** Founded in Berwick in 1921 by local grocer Earl Wise, the company grew into a major regional snack food empire. The massive production facility remains a staple of the town’s modern identity.
* **Berwick Offray:** The town is also well-known as the home of Berwick Offray, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of decorative gift ribbons and bows.

# 3. The Berwick Bulldogs Football Legacy

For a town of its size, Berwick has a legendary reputation in high school sports. The **Berwick Bulldogs** high school football team is one of the most historically dominant programs in the nation. Under legendary coach George Curry, the Bulldogs secured **six Pennsylvania State Championships** and were named **Mythical National Champions three times** (1983, 1992, and 1995).

# 4. Local Landmarks & Traditions

* **The Jackson Mansion:** Built between 1877 and 1879, this striking, historic stone mansion and its accompanying carriage house are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offer a glimpse into the town’s wealthy industrial era.
* **The Stuart Tank Memorial Museum:** Dedicated to preserving the borough’s massive role in WWII, local volunteers work to keep the history of the workers and the Stuart tanks alive.
* **Christmas Boulevard:** Since 1947, the Berwick Jaycees have hosted a massive, mile-long holiday light display down Market Street every December. It draws thousands of regional visitors annually—and a fun local tradition features Santa Claus handing out bags of Berwick’s own Wise Potato Chips to passing cars.
